Sitka Wildlife Tour

Sitka, Alaska, United States
There is no docking a cruise ship in Sitka. Tender boats (basically the covered, motorized life boats from the ship) bring passengers from the ship to the dock in Sitka. For us, our arranged excursion was a boat which picked us up at our ship. We jumped onboard the wildlife tour which we thoroughly enjoyed from the deck and enclosed cabin of a much smaller vessel.

We saw whales, seals, lots of otters, bald eagles and much more . After being on a ship all the time, we wondered why we booked ourselves on this breezy, ½ day journey in the bay at Sitka. Question answered. Abundant wildlife.

On our return we watched a fishing fleet take turns dropping their nets, circling, catching and loading the salmon as they attempted to return the their rivers of their birth. Meandering through the streets of Sitka we found lots of tourist shopping, decent food and enjoyed an extended stay at Saint Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral.
