Hen Wallow Falls

Catons Grove, North Carolina, United States
It rains all night tap, tap, tapping on the metal roof and gurgling down the downpipes. Dark and sleepy morning. We arise at the crack of noon once again. The hike to the falls is 4.4 miles roundtrip and considered moderate in difficulty. It is billed as a "pleasant walk through hemlock and rhododendron forest". However, surrounded by a deep mist and continuing drizzle on the canopy above us, this pleasant trail became spooky and a bit challenging when we hit large areas of mud on the trail formed from the prior night's rainstorms. The trail leads to the base of the falls by way of steep switchbacks. Hen Wallow Creek, only two feet wide at the top of the falls, fans out to 20 feet at the base. The waterfall is an impressive 90 feet high.
