We visit the Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site.at Witleess Bay Ecological Site. It’s the oldest surviving lighthouse (1836) in Newfoundland on the most easterly point of North America.
Then we went to Petty Harbour and Bay Bulls. The French had Placentia and this area was prominently Irish. The water was very deep and good for naval boats. During WW II they used nets to catch German submarines trying to sneak into the harbour. It was also a big cod fishing community. But in 1992 there was a cod fishing moratorium which put a lot of people out of jobs. Offshore oil was discovered in the late ‘70’s which helped the economy.
Then we got on a boat to steam over to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve which is home to the largest Puffin population on North America’s east coast. It is also known as the Seabird Capital. We weren’t sure if the boat would be able to take us due to possible high swells. Rain was no problem. We did manage to go but it was a very rough ride and we got soaked in the rain. Some people got sea sick. I was fine with my borrowed wrist ban and ginger chews.
We had a nice lunch of sandwiches and squares above the Gatherall’s store.
We had a lovely Farewell dinner at our Delta Hotel and Carolyn gave out prizes for the photography scavenger hunt.
