Sundance and Hulett

Devils Tower, Wyoming, United States
We rode the Spyder to Sundance but the Cook County Museum was closed so we headed back to the tiny western town of Hulett which was just down the road from Devils Tower. We came upon a small museum where the curator was a former government archeologist who had travelled the world. We sure learned a lot. i.e. Back in the early 1940's one man did a parachute jump and landed on top of the tower which is the size of a football field. He was rescued days later by rock climbers. We saw quite a few rock climbers making their ascent.

We got back just in time to see a group of small planes take off from the field in front of our RV. Later around 6:00 pm we saw about 8 hot air balloons coming in for a landing in the same field. Unbeknownst to us, there was a balloon fest scheduled for this weekend and it was too windy this morning to take off.

At 7:00 pm we walked over to the KOA patio to sit outside and watch the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind which was directed by Spielberg in 1977 and cast a very young Richard Dreyfuss. It also featured Devils Tower as the site where the aliens came to meet the earthlings and do an exchange. Good thing we dressed warm since it became quite chilly.
