Iceland was the only part of the trip where we rented a car. There is a highway, almost all paved, that rings the roughly circular island. Although there are public buses on the highway, you have to leave it for many of the points of interest, so the only reasonable alternatives to car rental are tour group or (if you are willing to camp and have lots of time) hitch-hiking. We first went to Althing and Geysir, and then proceeded counterclockwise.
