Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Western Brook Pond is a former fjord that has been blocked from the sea and is now fresh water. (In Newfoundland a small lake is usually called a pond). A private company controls access to this part of the park, offering a cruise on the pond for $62 -- you have to walk 3 km each way to get to it. It may be necessary to book. It is worth lining up early to get a seat on the upper level. It can be pretty cold even on a warm day. It was the only experience we had in Newfoundland that was a bit too touristy, but it was still worth it. But I would disagree with those who say it is the highlight of the park.

The Lookout Trail starts at the Woody Point Discovery Centre, just takes a couple of hours, a sustained climb with good views .

We just did part of the Green Gardens Trail, down to Old Man's Cove and back. You can continue along the coast and loop around to make a day of it.

Gros Morne mountain is perhaps the most challenging one-day walk, but not necessarily the most rewarding. In hindsight I would plan to spend a day on the Tablelands.

We spent five days in the national park. When we arrived from Deer Lake the weather was bad, so after a night at Terry's B&B we kept driving up north, a good decision because we had good weather when we returned later. Thus was our controversial decision not to book anything in advance vindicated.
