Salvage, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Salvage was said to be "often overlooked" so we went there. It's a pretty village with a network of trails that are well signposted but not well groomed. The short trail up to the lookout and cemetery was pretty good, although we were told, "They haven't done any work on it this year." That trail was a bit overgrown, while in the cemetery, surrounded by a picket fence, the gravestones were barely visible. The rest of the trails were overgrown up to your knees, with still a tunnel underneath, but it was hard to see where to put your feet -- evidently not groomed this year or last, maybe longer. If they tried harder they ought to get more visitors, but I can imagine that a lot of work was put into it in the past with little result, so maybe they didn't feel it was worth the effort. Some sources said there are "abandoned houses" on these trails, but my impression from talking to people there is that there is no longer anything to see except perhaps a cellar hole. I like abandoned houses, and other abandoned things, but I won't often go out of my way for a cellar hole.

We were pleasantly surprised at how few tourists there were in Newfoundland, because we don't much like tourists . There were almost no Europeans. In Costa Rica there were lots of Europeans, and Costa Rica is at least as far from Europe as Newfoundland. Of course Costa Rica is warmer, but if you are interested in the nature, as many Europeans profess to be, Newfoundland is at least as good. There were a relatively large number of Americans -- maybe they think everywhere else is dangerous. Most of the tourists were Canadian, and most of these were Ontarians. I don't know where Quebecers go for their holidays.
