Kerry and Dingle

Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland
Muckross House (see picture) was built in 1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert.  Unfortunately, practically before the Herberts had had time to get well settled in, Queen Victoria decided to visit in 1861.  It cost so much to bring it up to a standard that she could feel happy with, that the Herberts had to sell it shortly afterward.
Another result of the Queen's visit was that many points of local interest became musts for the limited number of very high-class tourists who were jaunting around back in those days.  And to this day, the Ring of Kerry draws masses of tourists, even though the rest of the west coast of Ireland, all the way up to Donegal (and there in particular) is just as scenic, if not more so.
