"Malaysia's press freedom takes a hit as the country drops a shocking 23 places to 145th out of 179 countries in the Reporters Without Borders' Press Freedom Index 2013. The results of the yearly report is [sic] Malaysia's worst ever showing in the index by the global watchdog on media freedom ... [The report] compared Malaysia to Cambodia which faced what the report terms "authoritarianism and censorship on increase."
"In 2012 and 2011, two massive protests in Malaysia, Bersih 2.0 and 3.0, led by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections have seen heavy media crackdown from authorities leading up to, and after, the protests. Allegations of police brutality against media personnel on duty also surfaced after the Bersih 3.0 protest in April 2012."
"Publisher wants JAIS to return books" [same issue]
"Book publisher Mmmm issued a letter of demand to the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) for seizing books from him ... including 13 copies of Irshad Manji's banned book Allah, Liberty and Love. ... Mmmm also wants JAIS to pay for books titled Who Needs an Islamic State? which were also seized during the raid."
