We have had some very fun and busy days.
Went to Discovery Museum
. This museum tells the history of Siam and how it turned into Bangkok . It is a very interesting Place.
The different Kings that fought won or lost.
This was considered the golden land, because it would grow so much.
It is amazing the produce, fruits ( many we have never heard of ) that are for sale or just in your back yard.
Would have loved to spend more time here, but got over taken by several groups of school children touring the museum. Sounded like a bunch of bees buzzing.
Then today I thought we were going to the Grand Palace but our host wanted to surprise us and brought us to the floating market.
As you walk up to the market there are flowers everywhere. (Actually there are flowers everywhere in Thailand
. This is the second market we've seen today. Plus flowers for sale along the side walks.)
And of course food, food and more food. Food of every variety and form imaginable . Street food, cafe food, venders, and floating kitchens.
Then our host walks over to the ticket counter and starts talking. We can listen but there is no way for us to guess what she's saying.
And wa la tickets for a 3 hour tour . So we get on the boat and off we go.
Bangkok has a river and canals running thru the whole city. They even have street signs telling what canal you are on or are turning on. This is a very busy canal or river, I am not sure which we were on because we turned so many corners.
We seen an electrician climbing a pole out of a boat to fix an electric problem.
We seen a boat collection garbage with about 20 big garbage cans in the boat
. I guess they exchange the full one for an empty.
Many boats are pangas . Some are 50 ft long and there were about 20 people in them.
Some of the boats are much smaller. The locals use them constantly. We seen two ladies getting out with their groceries. A local had her boat full of plastic bottles she was taking to recycle.
Many were boats like small kitchens. They have their small cooking unit ( sometimes a small propane stove sometimes a small wood fueled burning unit with a wok type cooking pan on it.
They float up to you and you decide what you want to eat. They will cook it right there and hand it to you.
Others are selling everything from eggs, fruits, vegetables, cabbages, corn ,to items I am not sure what they were.
We stopped at a place where they sold bread buns
. Then you throw the buns in the water. AND DUCK!! These huge fish come flying out of the water after the buns . Water starts flying everywhere. UGH most of us got drenched. Smelly , fishy, water. Not the perfume of choice!!
Some beautiful homes , some shanties , some temples, and some abandoned homes are all built along these canals. Steps coming down to the water. Patios right beside the canals. Mail boxes and newspaper holders are right there for the post man to deliver by boat. Just as any road or highway.
As we are going back a horn honks and another boat is coming around the corner. As he gets close he guns the engine abit to get past us and -----------------------------------------------------------SOAKED again.! I truly would have rather gone home to take a shower!!
When we got back to the dock. Tip and Am took us to tables by the river. Along both sides of the tables are floating kitchens
. You look at the menu and depending on what you want, order. Well the waitress brings two plates and asks for money so of course Roy pays. Then she comes with our drinks and asks for money. Roy pays. Then she comes with two more plates and asks for money. We are confused. Then Am explains that depending on what you order, meals come from different boats , so you have to pay for each meal. Roy was getting a bit paranoid every time the waitress came close he asked if he had to get out his wallet again!!
