Bulls blood

Debrecen, Hungary
Monday

Egri Bikaver (Bulls Blood) is the most famous of the wines from Eger and in my personal view is a really good wine, and hence why we have acquired a bottle each to take home .

The journey from Budapest by train was pretty non eventful and by taking an intercity train instead we arrived into Eger almost an hour earlier than scheduled. However, on a Monday most places are closed and therefore we made the most of the laid back attitude to life there.

Eger is a beautiful town and definitely not one to miss... Although everything was closed we still found a couple of sights:

There is a minaret remaining from the Turkish invasions, which is also the most northerly located one in Europe. It only continues to stand as the town folk tried to pull it down with oxen but failed and decided to leave it there as a reminder of the events that had passed. A climb up here is not for the faint hearted and even I felt claustrophobic before reaching the top! The views are great but in all honesty after the climb and due to the lack of space once you reach the top, I would have given it a miss if I had known what it would be like .

The Minorite church on Dobo Istavan Square is worth sticking your head into, as it has some spectacular artwork inside.

Early evening we headed out on foot to the Valley if the Beautiful Women to sample the wines. There are numerous wine cellars back to back on both sides of the valley so it's hard to choose which to set up the bar tab at. We went to No. 18 and then moved on to next door when realising they had sold out of Bulls Blood. This turned out to be well worth it as inside the cellar itself they had converted the 'tunnel' into levels so it was completely different to the other cellars which at best were just dark/dingy holes :)!

Tuesday

Today is a travel day with our planned route taking us over the border into Romania and the Maramures region. We stopped in Debrecen which seemed a lovely little town which holds numerous events throughout the year... Lots of churches and impressive buildings. A suitable point to grab some snacks before taking the train East and over the border.
