Viscri, Romania
Another homestay, this time in Viscri which is, like Sighisoara, another Unesco World Heritage site. I was expecting not to have running water and instead drop toilets, but things have progressed a little here and are more sophisticated. However the beds were the old style Romanian ones that are inside the drawers of a large chest!

The village people are largely Roma (gypsies) but 15 Saxons remain along with the impressive Saxon fortified church which is 13th century gothic with walls that were added later on to protect it from invasion .

The village receives a lot more visitors now and virtually survives because of the tourism. All the women seem to knit socks (!) and other woollen items and the men are responsible for labour intensive jobs.

Everything served for dinner came from the villages produce including the wine.

Definitely the highlight so far in terms of accommodation.
