Bran castle... Disappointing

Brasov, Transylvania, Romania
This morning we ventured out to Rasnov, just 12km west of Brasov, to check out the ruined fort.

An Italian acquired the fort in 2000 and started renovating it . From reading the displays in the archaeological museum, it sounds like he trashed the place digging up everything and offending all the Romanians, before then passing what was left, onto his daughter.

In 2010 the Romanians took the Fort back and are now in the process of trying to renovate it properly.

I would love to come back and see this site after the work is complete.

After a couple if short detours to find an old Roman road but instead found numerous toilet stops (Romanian style), we headed off to Bran and the highlight of the trip - Bran castle.

The castle now looks as it would have done during the time of Queen Marie of Romania's reign as it was her summer residence.

In my view the castle doesn't look anything like a vampire had lived here. With its White washed Walls and quaint turrets, it's not the black menacing building with towers that you picture when thinking if Dracula. In fact, it us widely known that the castle has limited connections with Vlad the Impaler and is merely the setting of Bram Stokers Dracula novel and hence why it gas become so popular with tourists. For a Sunday it was jam packed with visitors and the over priced tacky souvenirs dud nit appeal much either. So we returned to town for the beer festival...

Turns out the beer festival finished yesterday so we found a restaurant on the square and hung out there until Cat got hassled by a local drunk!
