Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
We travelled over the border yesterday, crossing at Ruse.

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the second Bulgarian kingdom and is set on the banks of the Yantra River .

There is a distinct difference now that we are in another country. The people dress in normal clothes but most of these look like they are second hand and have just been thrown together and don't match or fit (?).

The main attraction in Veliko Tarnovo is the fortress and the citadel which you need a good couple if hours to explore fully. The paintings inside the fortresses the top if the hill are some of the strangest I have ever seen - depicting death, they are very odd,yet mesmerising, as thereof so much intertwined into the stories that they attempt to tell.

There are plenty of monasteries here - three if which were included in out tour. So by the end of the day I was completely out of enthusiasm and can only hope that we have a few days without seeing any more icons!
