Prison life and great hawker centre

Changi Village, Singapore
Most think of Changi as the site of the notorious prisoner of war camp and, more recently, the airport. However, in recent years the village there has been revived and is now a popular place to visit to get out of the city.

There's a small harbour, seafront board walk consisting of six sections, a charming village with a great hawker centre and of course the Changi prison museum and chapel .

If you have time after all that, take a ferry to nearby Pulau Ubin which is guaranteed to take you back in time.

I really enjoyed my visit to the museum. Entrance is free but I highly recommend the audio guide costing $8, as it brings to life the displays with contributions from survivors.

There are numerous accounts of what life was like accompanying the photographs, pictures and other pieces on display throughout the little museum. Although do not under estimate it's size, taking time to read the information and listen to the guide will keep you going for a couple of hours. If you have plenty of time and are on a tight budget you can get away with sharing a guide between 2 people, alternating between reading and listening.

Whether you're heading to/from Pulau Ubin or spending some time in Changi, I can promise you that a visit to the hawker centre in the village, will fulfil all Singaporean food cravings. There is so much choice here and the food is of a very high standard and at a very reasonable price. My personal recommendations have to be:

- Won ton mee - either dry or with a soup base, the noodles are cooked just right and the little pork dumplings and roast pork is one of the best I have had since Penang in Malaysia.

- Nasi lemak - try the International nasi lemak stall, which features in all the guidebooks. It's moved location to no. 3 and there often a long queue or they have run out, but when you taste the nasi leman you will understand why.

- Pisang goreng - deep fried bananas in batter, need I say more?!
