Nan, Thailand
Unfortunately there is not much in the way of information available in this city unless you are Thai... But if you are, you're in luck, as they have a large team of Thai speaking staff at the tourist office and an annual tourist festival; which just happened to be the day we arrived.

There is one English speaking lady in the tourist info office, but sadly her attitude the day we were there made us feel she was virtually rushing us out the door . She had very little information she wanted to share other than a pathetic leaflet that told us how to get to Nan, not anything about what to see our do there.

Failing help with sights we asked about transportation, but received a non committal response advising that we would just get charged over the going rate if we tried to get transport anywhere. She went on to tell us that the English tourist tram that goes round town wouldn't be running the following day as she had the day off and everyone else only spoke Thai.

Not a great welcome.

We decided to leave the following day after having looked round the Wat Phumin (temple), as that seemed the only place in town worth a look. The murals here are quite extensive, and there were a few I recognised from postcards and pictures that I have seen sold as souvenirs stopping Thailand.

The walk to the bus station found us gawping at a beautiful white temple and another that was completely gold in color. Neither featured in the Lonely Planet, leaving me questioning whether the writers had ever been here? It's a shame we couldn't give this place a chance but we felt like we were unwelcome, and sporting a nasty cold I really didn't feel up to making any effort.
