Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
We loved Twillingate Island and its surrounding areas. We did some amazing hiking (including the hike to Cod Jack's Cove ... Cod Jack must have been one heck of a fisherman). We hit the blueberry jackpot ... they are in abundance everywhere and were big and perfectly ripe and widely available for the picking. We also attended two local kitchen parties with lively Newfoundland folk music (The Split Peas being the highlight) and a dinner theater, were invited to the home of a local couple for a cod dinner (cod filet, cod tongue and cod breeches...the ovaries), stayed at a comfortable bed and breakfast where the hosts were most congenial, saw an iceberg and a muscle farm up close thanks to a friendly fisherman named Carl who offered to take us out in his littlle boat, and made it to funky Fogo Island for a day where artists are invited to do residencies. Although seeing an iceberg in August does bring the whole global warming concern to the forefront, I have to admit that, eventhough it was not as large as those that can be seen in June and early July, it was indeed a spectacular sight to see up close.
