Fabulous Hiking in Gros Morne National Park

Norris Point, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
We have spent the last 11 days in beautiful Gros Morne National Park. We have done all of the hikes on the northern side and most of the ones on the southern side of the park, including the splendid Green Garden hike, the rocky Gros Morne mountain hike, the Tablelands and the Trout River hike. This park has hikes that may not be as high as in other parts of the world that we have visited, but they are certainly every bit as beautiful as anywhere on the face of the earth. The variety of the terrain is VERY special here as it varies from tundra-like (without the permafrost) ... to wetlands such as bogs and marshes ... to Tuckamore forest which could otherwise be described as Hobbit boreal forest stunted by sea salt and wind ... to pebble and sandy beaches with stunning sea stacks ... to brooks and fjord ponds with their pristine water ... etc. And the geology of the Tablelands is something that is very unique as it is one of only 2 places on the planet that allow us to see with our very eyes deep ocean crust and the rocks of the Earth's mantle which lie exposed.

We stayed at Norris Point International Hostel in Norris Point, an interesting experience as this was the area's hospital at one time ... the building has been transferred into a non profit corporation, part of which has been converted into a quite comfortable and good value hostel. We visited the fish plant in nearby Rocky Harbour often to buy our cod or salmon fillets, scallops and shrimps which we mostly cooked on the BBQ.
