Hanging on Isla Isabela

Puerto Villamil, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
The 2 hour boat ride on Thursday, crossing the Pacific from Isla Santa Cruz to Isla Isabela, was choppy to say the least. By the time we arrived, my torn rotator cuff felt more like a separated shoulder than anything else. I think that we'll be sitting at the back of the boat from now on!

We did a leisurely 5 hour walk yesterday through the national park along the coast encountering varied vegetation including mangroves, lagoons, swamps, etc and varied wildlife in their natural habitat going about their daily chores ... marine iguanas engaging in foreplay, lava lizards scurrying amongst the stones, sea turtles feeding, the giant tortoise crawling ever so slowly of course, finches and sea birds, etc. The last couple of kilometers on the way back along the beach was the perfect ending to a wonderful day.

Nat hiked up Volcan Negra earlier today with a group of 15 other travellers. I took a pass to rest my shoulder. Volcan Negra is apparently one of the largest volcanic craters in the world. The last eruption occurred in 2005 and from the rim at the top, the hardened lava flow in the crater gives the appearance of a gigantic lake of black tar.

We are setting off for Isla San Cristobal in the morning.
