Things that I missed - Saturday when we caught the elevator up the hill, there was a young man in the elevator that could not stand up straight he was so tall. Sharon and I looked like midgets beside him LOL
Sunday we were walking around in Mijas and a branch ripped Ed's hat off his head
. Boy we laughed. You probably had to be there LOL
Today we caught a very nice bus to Torrox from the front of our hotel at 8:30. We eventually had a bus load of people from different hotels and different parts of Canada. BUT we had to have a guide that could speak French and English because some people could not speak English. Surprised me, but that is probably silly because people from Quebec do not want to speak English.
The sun was shinning and it was nice and warm, it got to 19 today. On our drive we saw lots of greenhouses and terraced orchards. Most of the trees are avocado or mangos, they out number the olive trees. People are changing over and they are also getting out of growing grapes. When you see grapes they are growing under the olive trees. In Canada we are changing our orchards from fruit to grapes. The villages are all white, and spread all over the countryside. This is a very hilly to mountainous area of Spain. They grow tomatoes, cucumbers lettuce and flowers in the greenhouses. Some greenhouses grow Passion Fruit trees because it is not hot or humid enough outside for them.
The town of Torrox is 15,000 people, and Daniel (our tour guide) said most of the older people are trying to get into homes that are located in the flatter parts of the town. First stop on our tour was the Our Lady of the Snow Chapel. Daniel explained that it got its name when some fishermen almost drowned and they said a angel saved them
. When they got back to people they picked her picture out of all the pictures they had. One week of the year is called the HOLY WEEK and they go all out to celebrate. They take the gold platform out and put the Virginia Mary on top and 40 men carry it around for 4 hours. Other places have way bigger platforms and thousands take turn carrying it for 12 hours. I have seen this on TV.
Now we were taken to town square for a bathroom break and coffee break. I was the first one in line and Ed was behind me. I didn't take a really close look at the picture on the door and just went in the first door. Ed went in the other one and then I heard people laughing outside and when I came out I had gone in the men's and Ed went in the ladies LOL. There was no difference
Then we went for a nice walk around the town square and street of the town. We worked our way to the CoOp where the olive growers took their olives. The streets are very narrow and we had to share them with cars, it was very interesting, Some of the walkways were tiled and some sides of the buildings also. Again we saw lots of plants and flowering bushes/trees. Different areas compete each year to get the plaque that says they have the prettiest streets in their area. We saw a pharmacy that even had the old drawers that they used to store their drugs. Bought a mango and pomegranate from this lady that sold things out of her garage.
Once we got to the CoOp we were shown where they dumped their loads of olives - trucks, cars or whatever they have
. Then they go on this conveyor and they work the leaves off, then get washed several times and they become a paste and then the paste comes in and the water and olive oil are separated and then again the oil is cleaned and more. Meat is removed and then it goes to the area to be put in bottles. We got to taste some olive oil and it was very good. Ed and Sharon bought some olives and olive oil.
Now we were off by bus to go for our home cooked lunch, it was VERY good. It was like eating in China, you did not know how many dishes were coming and they kept coming. When we got off the bus we got a sample of sweet wine and then went inside to have lunch. Stage one was pieces of bread, olives and 2 kinds of sausage. Next was potato pie (like a quiche) then Mijas (this was a dish of bread crumbs, that you mixed in chopped tomatoes, oranges. avocados, onions and olives) it was very good. Well we thought that was the end and were waiting for dessert NOT. Now we got a chicken soup with rice and vegetables, great flavour Then we got meatballs and then finally fruit salad. Was an awesome meal. Now we understand why they have siestas after they eat lunch.
Eventually we got back on the bus and drove back to our hotel and arrived at around 5::00 Frachesco was our bus driver and he was amazing They sure have small roads here and lots of cars and other buses and big trucks sharing the roads.
When we got back to the hotel we went for a walk with old bread to try and feed the fish but they were not around so I carried the bread back to our hotel room. Supper was tea and a delicious mango for me and an orange for Tom. We also had a cookie with our tea. Ed and Sharon went down to happy hour to try and get more info on what tours and places other people they know from Portugal went on. It was so loud last time we passed, Sharon will update us and let us know what is good or bad.
Will check the night sky to see if we can see this awesome moon. Not sure what is on for tomorrow but it will be interesting.
Night and Hugs
