Granada, Andalusia, Spain and Canary Islands
We were up bright and early again this morning. Our bus was a few minutes early this morning so that was nice. I took a picture of the sunrise on our drive to Granada. We had to stop and pick up other people this morning but not near as many as the other day.
At our bathroom stop half way to Granada Sharon and I had our picture taken with statues of Don Quixote and his trusty partner . The scenery was the same with a few more crops of potatoes, and corn. There were also groves of trees that look something like a poplar. I wondered what they were used for and Sharon said for the hard toilet paper LOL. Then we got to Granada and started on a walking tour around 10:30. First stop was a beautiful church and I paid to light 2 candles to cover all our bases. Then we got some free time to stroll where we wanted. Most of the shops are all the same but we did see a few high end stores with Flamingo dresses, WOW they are crazy high prices and even for the little girl dresses. We walked through a very clean fish and meat market. They do love their fountains and court yards in Spain. We all figure that who ever does the laying of the tiles and little stones in the roads has LOTS and LOTS of skill and patience. I thought some of the rock work was green until I looked closer and it is small plants. Again we saw fruit and vegetable stores. There was also one of those guys that dresses up like a statue and stands very still like in New York and other cities.
ALL the streets are very narrow and our bus drivers have been amazing at getting around. The streets you walk around looking at the shops are also very narrow. Yes we again stopped for lunch and had pizza.
We had to be back to the bus for 2:00 and we were at the famous La Alhambra by 2:30. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our english speaking guide was AMAZING, he knew lots about the muslim religion and language. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in AD 889 on the remains of Roman fortifications and then it was rebuilt in the mid-13th century by the Moorish emir Mohammed ben Ahmar, and the ways of the Muslim faith were followed. It was taken over by the Christians in 1492. This place is steeped in history and our guide was very passionate about keeping the area respected and trying very hard to keep it as close to the original palaces and out buildings as possible. Time, people, pollution and other factors have taken its toll on the buildings, most of the original colours of blue, red and gold have gone from the walls and ceilings.
Will let the pictures tell more of what we did today.
ALMOST FORGOT our guide says everyone is afraid that Trump is going to start World War III and they think Americans were CRAZY to elect him. He said several times during the day how people just could not understand the Americans. LOL we said neither can we, we wanted to make sure they knew we were Canadian.
