Hopkins Prairie Campground, Florida, United States
Left Erin after breakfast and had a leisurely trip on back roads to Grand Bend; on arrival at The Pinery Provincial Park (PP) we had four inches of wet snow on the ground which looked pretty. Besides working on Mum's estate items, we took Yukon to the beach most days and got to watch the Michigan game at the Tipsy Pelican. The weather turned cold and windy also included hail.
When we were ready to head South, the Sarnia border crossing was completely hassle-free with the only questions related to what fresh fruit and vegetables we had – answer none – then he just wished us a happy winter down south. Our first day of driving got us to a clean Motel 6 in Kentucky where we watched a college football game on TV while dining on Pizza.
Off the next morning, we stayed north of Atlanta at the Red Top Mountain State Park (SP) which was inexpensive and included full hookups. The layout of the campground was interesting and utilized the hilliness to full advantage for providing privacy - we would stay here again.
Left early the following day and had an easy trip through Atlanta with very little traffic – being a Saturday helped. Our destination was the Ocean Pond Campground in Osceola National Forest (NF); the “hosts” were a real pain so we decided to move along after only one night.
It was great to see Ed and his old dog Pearl on arrival at Hopkins Prairie Campground in the Ocala NF. With Deer hunting season open, a fair number of sites were taken but we were lucky to get a secluded campsite where Yukon had lots of running space. It was too cold for the Bats but the Barred Owls gave us a great concert every evening. I even got to see my first Coral Snake in the wild; thank-goodness that we had Yukon on a leash since this snake would do more damage than larger Rattlesnakes.
In general, the trip South was a piece of cake. Stay tuned for the upcoming Thanksgiving festivities in the next Blog.
