McDonald Lake Recreation Site, British Columbia, Canada
We left Sam McGee's stomping grounds early and headed towards Whitehorse for supplies, gas and a dump station. On our way to Atlin we saw a Black Bear eating a salad at the side of the road. We then headed to McDonald Lake Recreation Site (RS) where the last three kilometres are really potholed and the road was flooded by Beavers. Our favourite site was waiting for us so we quickly setup before the rainshowers arrived. For the first time in a fortnight it got dark at night and Yukon slept longer in the morning. Atlin seems to be closed on Tuesday but we can get slow internet at the Northern Lights College to stay in touch.
On our way to pickup spring water on the Warm Springs road we came across a brown Black Bear; in fact, half of our Black Bear sitings have been with brown coats. We took our water from Grotto Creek and headed back to our trailer. For a couple of nights we have shared the Rec Site with two couples from Whitehorse who were extremely quiet.
On Canada Day (July First), we went into Atlin to enjoy their parade and eat muffins at the local ballpark. We have also seen John and Linda whom we have now known for years; they sold their last trap line a couple of years back but still have a house in town and a log house overlooking McDonald Lake. Cindy's Wolverine (named Blue) pelt was trapped by John and purchased in 2015.
In our quiet times, we have slowly been cleaning the dust and mud from the camper accumulated from the Demster but it still needs to visit a truck wash bay soon to complete its rejuvenation. It is amazing how fast time flies when doing almost nothing; but I really love the quietness and wildness in this remote corner of British Columbia.
Our next destinations will be West of Whitehorse; stay tuned for this Blog in late July or early August.
