On the road - an education
On the road to Khajuraho it was interesting to see so many billboards and banners for education, not just schools but for private higher education. In a deregulated market private providers meet the growing demand that public institutions are unable to meet. There has also been a marked increase in the number of colleges, affiliated to universities, which also provide higher education courses.

According to the recent All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE 2010-2011) of the 621 universities, 178 are privately managed. 200 universities are located in rural areas and seven are exclusively for women. Colleges, affiliated to universities, are also a significant part of the higher education (HE) system. There are 32,974 colleges (excluding constituent units of deemed and private universities, off-campus centres and recognised centres) affiliated to 225 universities. Of affiliated universities fourteen have more than 500 colleges and Rajasthan University has 990 colleges. The growth in the number of colleges has been significant from just under 600 in 1950 to nearly 33,000 in 2011.(Department of HE, Government of India, 2011)

The total enrolment in higher education has been estimated to be 27.5 million (15.5 million males and 12.0 million females. Calculated for the18-23 age range the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in HE in India is 19.4% (20.8 male, 17.9% female). For Scheduled Castes, it is 13.5% and for Scheduled Tribes, it is 11.2% (AISHE 2010-2011).

On the road - chatting and learning to labour
Other sights on the journey included women in brightly dressed saris riding on motor cycles, pick-up trucks and jeeps packed to the brim with men.

As always women seem to bear the burden carrying heavy loads.

Coming to Khajuraho
A little over 3 hours on the road we're not far from our hotel. After checking in we will visit the Eastern group of temples and tomorrow we are scheduled to visit the Western group of temples.
