Sunshine and showers in Calangute

Sinquerim, Goa, India
We take a taxi from our hotel to Calangute where we spend a pleasant morning walking around looking at the shops and stalls. Some people come to Calangute for Big Peckers whilst others come to shop at Shri Ganesh General Stores. We didn't see any big peckers but we did pop into the general stores to buy some drinks!

Back to the 1930's
Calangute has a very colonial feel, reminders of its colonial past under Portuguese rule can be seen in the architecture as well as in cultural, culinary and spiritual matters. Some of the houses and buildings are very art deco in style but unfortunately many are in a state of disrepair or look as though they need a bit of care and attention.

Fruit and veg, chicken and fish
The indoor fish market, which is in the process of being renovated - at least according to the sign - is still busy. The vendors, mainly women, squat down on the floor with the morning's catch.

Around one side of the market there are concrete counters where men butcher chicken and meat. Outside the fish market there are more butchers and vendors selling vegetables which are laid out on tarpaulins.

From sunshine to showers
In an instant the heavens open up and we're pleased to be sitting under cover on the verandah of a bar on the main street. We sip our drinks slowly, making them last as long as possible before ordering another.

The rain is torrential and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. Eventually it does, of course, and we wander along the streets a little more before hailing a taxi and heading back to our hotel.
