Left the City of Agra in the morning to escape the pollution and be able to take a deep breath for once at the Ranthambhore National Park and Tiger Sanctuary. The ride took us all day due to the poor road conditions, insane traffic and apocalyptic towns we had to drive through. Seriously, I think most people here are living in deeper poverty than rural areas in Cambodia or Indonesia. I saw utterly neglected naked kids playing with fire on landfills which once were riverbeds, men defecating on the sidewalk and women with burkas! urinating in a way that everyone can see their butts... Dignity must be rare in this country. The reason why I write those details is because no one ever does in the guide books. Even though I have seen those things almost every day since I arrived! So it must be quite common and therefore worth mentioning when at the same time this is a nation who prides itself with its 5000 years of civilization...
Oh yes, and on the way we stopped at Fatehpur Sikri, a former walled capitol city, with a big mosque and palaces
. Unfortunately as almost all historic buildings in India they are mostly impressive for their size from the outside but inside completely empty. They all seem stripped of everything remotely valuable and then left to decay. Apart from the Taj Mahal, which as a national symbol seems fortunate enough to receive the necessary funds.
After checking into the hotel I realized there is a GIANT Indian wedding party going on next door. So there goes my sleep for tonight...
Soviel fuer meinen Schlaf heute Nacht...
