Got picked up by my Bhutanese entourage :) driver Rinzy, my guide Kesang and her colleague Pema, who joined us on this public holiday. Since archery is the national sport here we started the morning watching the men demonstrating their incredible skills in a competition at the archery ground. After that we drove up the mountains to a viewpoint overlooking the busy Bhutanese capitol Timphu. Not far from there is the Motithang Takin Preserve, housing Bhutan's oddball mammal and national animal - the Takin. Next stop was the gigantic new Buddha statue across town on top of another mountain. The site is still under construction but the workers there granted us access anyway. It will be the 17th biggest Buddha statue in the world and the hollow body will be filled with another 170.000 smaller Buddha's...
Back in town we had lunch and checked out the National Memorial Chorten before we headed for the majestic Trashi Chhoe Dzong . This giant monastery on the west bank of the Wang Chhu river houses not only monks but also the kings throne room, the National Assembly and two ministries. It was also the place where the coronation of the current king took place in 2008.

Da Bogenschiessen hier der Nationalsport ist, gingen wir zuerst zu einem der Wettbewerbe, wo wir uns deren unglaubliche Kuenste anschauten. Danach fuhren wir hoch in die Berge zu einem Aussichtspunkt, von wo man die geschaeftige Hauptstadt Timphu ueberblicken konnte. Nicht weit davon befindet sich die Motithang Takin Preserve, ein Tierpark fuer Bhutan's einzigartiges Nationaltier, das Takin. Den naechsten Stop machten wir an der fast fertig gebauten riesigen Buddha Statue auf einem Berg am anderen Ende der Stadt. Der Hohlraum der Statue wird spaeter mit 170 000 kleineren Statuen gefuellt sein...
Zurrueck in der Stadt schauten wir uns nach dem Mittagessen den National Memorial Chorten und das beeindruckende Trashi Chhoe Dzong. Das gigantische Wehrkloster am Westufer des Wang Chhu beherbergt neben den Moenchen auch den Thronsaal des Koenigs, die Nationalversammlung und zwei Ministerien. Hier fand 2008 auch die Kroenung des Thronnachfolgers statt.
