Diner's Delight in Natchez

Natchez, Mississippi, United States
Pulled out of New Orleans around 0900hrs and were heading for the Causeway Bridge to Head North..followed directions and only went 1 block to far, stopped and checked directions at a Garage and were able to go back 1 block and reconnect...The Causeway bridge goes over Lake Ponchartrain. It is the longest bridge over water in the world..pretty amazing ..Almost like going over the Bridge at Redcliffe (in Brisbane) about a 100 times.. Anyway we followed the smaller roads through some really beautiful countryside.. Green as green with cute little houses on them..sometimes large mansions...just glorious...Its definately better than the highways.
We got to Natchez around 1400hrs and finally found a place for lunch ...What a crack up..we went in just looking for a sandwich and fair dinkum it was like stepping back in time...There was 2 tables and a counter with stools..One table had about 3 local black men sitting at it, there was another black man eating his lunch at the counter..then us....The menu was hand written on a whiteboard..basically it was about 3 different sandwiches...then a hot plated meal...Corn bread, Grits Meat & Gravy...When we sat at the Counter the bloke that served us was shocked to say the least...then the cook yelled that he had no Gravy ..then he yelled he had no meat..So then he said maybe we should go down the street to the "Malt "! ...It was like we had stepped into a black soup kitchen and whites were banned..I think I understand a bit of what it must have been like for the Negros..It was really funny...anyway off we went to the Malt..which was like a diner only you order through a window and sit outside on a wooden bench or in your car..They did however had nice food and milkshakes etc.
After lunch Jo & I did a horse & cart ride with one of the local characters ..The old Antibellum homes and the Victorian homes are just magical...saw one for sale at $340,000....Apparently all the town history is organised and run by a group of women..The Natchez historical Society...Known locally as the Hoop Skirt Nazi's...if anyone want to paint their house of fence they have to run it by the Hoop Skirts..Very funny but so worth it as the houses really are great. A drive by "Natchez under the hill "
and saw the Riverboat & Casino afloat..and some nice restaurants..this was the seedy part of town back in the day with sailors, bootleggers and whores and basically not where the nice people would hang out.
On the way out to our motel we found a "Buffet KFC"...like can you believe it...That is Jenny heaven..unfortunately for me the other two are refusing to go there for dinner, maybe tomorrow when we leave..I wouldnt mind fried chicken for breakfast..checking into our wonderful accommodations at the Days Inn..$59 per night so we got 2 rooms to spead out..Man this is quality living !
We were just watching Mash and the TV was interupted by a Storm warning...Gale force winds 60 miles an hour and huge rains..so we have just looked out the door and its black out there..we will just have to wait and see if our Accommodations withhold the onslaught..lucky we are not on the road..
