Memphis, Tennessee, United States
400 miles under our belt today, but beautiful driving through the green green counrtyside of Mississippi.. Beautiful little towns and interesting people.. We stopped for gas at one place and the man provided full service..I grabbed a can of coke while he was filling our tank and I asked him "how much " and he said "50 cents !"....I dont think I have ever bought a can of drink for that...Shortly after that we got a bit lost and ended up this really small track..so we pulled into a Shed where a man & woman were sitting to get directions...After a chat the woman told me .."Y'all be careful now and not end up on a pig trail !"...God only knows what a Pig Trail looks like, but we got out before the Banjos started playing..it was very funny.
Yesterday in one of the Road Houses I picked up a Magazine for $1 ...It is a Mag that advertises all the local Criminals..Mug shots....They include Sex offenders who are listed separately..they even have puzzles...list the mugshot which matches the crime...they also have a Suduko..It is about 16 pages big...Just imagine getting done for DUI and ending up in that !!
First stop for the day was Kosciusco...We saw a BP Servo with Kangaroo Crossing on the front of it, so we stopped for some lunch..It was terrible and they had no pies or sausage rolls.. Just about 4 miles north of this town is a tiny settlement called Buffalo..This is where Oprah Winfrey was born so we had a look at the old church & where her house was and not a lot has changed I dont think... In the town of Kosciusco she has build a Boys & Girls Centre..I am thinking they provide activities for kids during holidays and on weekends etc...apparently they are throughout the area..
Next stop was Tupelo Mississippi where Elvis was born.. To say his house was tiny was an understatement..2 rooms !! They have the church & his house there along with a small museum which has a 30 min movie and a gift shop.
We are now in Memphis and tomorrow we are going to Gracelands..We are going to have to battle the crowds as this week is the 35th anniversary of his death..from the 10/17 every year is Elvis week where fans from all over the world show up here in Memphis..Our trip was NOT planned around this date, had we known we would have changed it !! Nevermind, will start out early and try and beat the crowds. Looking forward to it.
