Athens Georgia and Greenwood SC, Georgia, United States
An interesting trip south through the Smokey mountains, fantastic scenery and thew top is all covered in mist hence the name. The trees are just amazing, not just Pine forest like Canada here they have all different kinds, I should have paid more attention to the names but..what the heck I didnt, just take it from me they were pretty good. we turned off the highway once we got through the mountains and we promptly got lost.. So a bit of driving and turning around and back tracking and a few tense moments in the car we finally made it to Athens.
Athens is a University town, Georgia State Uni is there and the whole town is geared up for that . This is also the start of what they call the "Antibellum Trail"..which winds along and finishes in Macon Georgia. The sad thing is ...In Athens they have magnificent Antibellum homes which have been turned into Frat Houses for the University...Unbelievable...
Antibellum as I understand it..are homes built Pre Civil War and that was around 1830 odd. Most of the homes were burnt to the ground during the war, so the ones left are usually National Trust or privalely owned.
Anyway today we left Athens and got a bit lost AGAIN ! but back on track after a bit of manouvering and the first stop was Watkinsville , to check out the houses...saw a few but moved on to the next town on the trail Madison...Freaking amazing homes here ..had to park the car and take a walk for photos. Most of the homes here are privately owned so they are in immaculate condition. You will notice that todays photos are mostly all houses..It is a passion of mine so just flick through them.
After Madison cam Eatonton..yes I spelt it correctly. Eatonton had a few houses but was more famous for being the Home of Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit .. Also Alice Walker the author of the Colour Purple came from here. So Jo and I went into the old Uncle Remus Museum which was all rebuilt from materials used in local Slave cabins. We met a women named Georgia (yes same as the state) and she told us the story of Uncle Remus'....All the tales come from stories in the slave cabins..It was all very cute and I bought a small book for Ruby.
From Eatonton we drove to the town of Milledgeville ( and I cant even say that one) This is where we lost the Antibellum Trail...we followed signs that just petered out to nothing, so we got directions and they fell through twice, so we gave up and drove off to Augusta to visit the Famous golf course which holds the US Masters every year.....Well it took ages to find and at one stage we were at the front gate of a Military base and got turned around by the Guard room, The GPS gave up and we were back to lousy maps with even lousier map readers..(that would be me)..Finally after what seemed like forever we found it...Like I mean how cool does a place have to be....We could see ZERO !!! They had green plastic over all the fences and there wasnt even a moin gate to take a photo off..Peter couldnt even buy a Tshirt..so its REALLY Exclusive !!!
That was Augusta...heading North now for about 40 Minutes we came into the town of McCormick..Yay what a fabulous place !!! Its a Lumber town, it was fun driving around taking photos of all the things with our name on it..For those of you that dont know, thats my maiden name...See photos attached. Will be going back through there again tomorrow. Tonight we are staying in a town called Greenwood about 22 miles North of McCormick..Because when I looked up hotels there were none listed for McCormick..lol That should tell you something about the town..anyway more of that tomorrow..Its Goodnite from me.
