Charleston, South Carolina, United States
I finally surcumbed to the local fare for breakfast this morning, there was a group in for a conference at the hotel and they were Baptist Choir looking people..wearing all white with a splash of purple. and they were partaking in breakfast when I went to the dining room...so I lined up with them and had Biscuit (Scone) with sausage then covered in white gravy...I think it has gone straight to my cankles !! Fruit tomorrow I promise...Short trip down the coast to Charlestown about an hour from Georgetown, stopped at the visitors centre and left the car there while we did a city tour...The guide was terrific as theres a lot of history here and this was where the Civil war started..So many georgous homes some have been in some families for generations.. After the tour he dropped us off at the Atkins Rhett home which is right in the city..an original Antibellum home which has not been redone. Still partly furnished from the last owner in the late 1800's. Slave quarters at the back over the Cook house and the Stables..It was very interesting.
On the way to the Hotel Peter missed a couple of turns and we ended up going through the local Housing Estate ...It was definately a lock the door and wind up the window area..thankfully we came through unscathed.
Checked into the Marriott Hotel after lunch which makes a big change from a lot of the others we have been staying in thats for sure, this one doesnt have a diner attached ( dissappointing I know) We also have to pay for Breakfast and Internet...so theres something to be said for the cheap places.
We got the Shuttle bus into downtown and took a wander through the markets..I was amazed at the prices of the Cane baskets they weave locally from the weed out of the waters...Hugely expensive, a tray about 12 inches diameter maybe a bit bigger..was $500...rediculous. Makes me want to rush home and get my PNG baskets and bring them back to sell, maybe then I could buy me one of the big houses along the waterfront.. We wandered through the shops and picked up a few things (More) looks like another parcel looming.
We met up with Peter for dinner at a highly recommended Seafood restaurant called "Hymans" Good seafood at a realistic price ..so we whacked a bit more fried food down our necks ..just for a change. At the tables they have little engraved labels saying the people who had sat there, we had Mikhael Barishnokov..dancer, Michael Phelps and Anthony Hopkins...Thats not bad is it. Nearly a star spot I say..
I was looking for some "Gone with the wind" memorabillia but unfortunately it was all filmed in Hollywood !! Margaret Mitchell the author was from Atlanta I think but she went to School here in Charleston. The school was called the Ashley something Ladies school..Thats where she got the name Ashley..after the school, Ashley was an old govenor..and the Rhett came from Aitkin Rhett family that lived in the big house..Dissappointing really.
Tucked up in bed now and plum tuckered out more tomorrow....
