Icebergs & Whales

Saint Johns Newfoundland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
What a day today has been... Started with Kathryn chasing a stray cat around the room last night..which walzed in through the open window..thankfully I went to sleep after that as she apparently was hearing cats all night...Anyway we woke up at about 0500 and rolled over then didn't wake until 1030 so we flew out of bed and set off for Signal Hill which wasn't too far from our Hostel. St Johns harbour only has a small opening and on one side is Signal Hill and on the other is Amhurst lighthouse. We got some great photos from the top. Even had a ship come in. The town is just so colourful and with 29 degree temperatures and blue skies its just beautiful.
With that complete we then drove around looking for Cape Spear Lighthouse which took us awhile due to not having a clue ....eventually we ended up back in town and finding the right road. The Lighthouse was beautiful, we also saw an Iceberg off in the distance, which is a bit unusual because they have usually melted by now. So while we were Iceberg watching we saw Humpback Whales, there were boats out looking at the whales and they were really putting on a show for the tourists. People we up their just sitting on the grass watching them. We were very fortunate to see them with out having to go on a boat tour..(which I would never have done).
From Cape Spear we went in search of lunch as we had missed breakfast..It took ages to find something, there was nothing in Blackhead Bay so we drove down Petty Harbour which also had nothing and we ended up in a small place called Goulds where I spotted " Keiths Diner" So that was it...It was advertising quality foods which I love much to Kaff disgust...Tongue& chips, Breast & chips or chicken & chips... So in we went. After chatting with the waitress, she was 3rd Generation to work the store..Betty her Granny opened it in the 60's then Dad took over now the kids are working there ..so we had a good old chat with her and got some directions. Turns out the tongue is Cod tongues and the locals love them, unfortunately they didn't have any Seal flipper pies.
From Goulds we drove back into town and headed to the South Head and saw Amhurst Lighthouse, then we drove to Quidi Vidi which is another small inlet with quirky old houses around this very small body of water. Finally finished with touring for the day at 1800 we decided to find Walmart and do some shopping for camping later in the week.. We had a great time shopping up a storm and managed to fill a trolly without any drama. Then we went across to Joes the Supermarket and got some food..the Canadian little carrots & ranch dressing. We were knackered by the time we got home around 2000 lucky they keep Canadian shopping hours..
Now its rest time, blog & photo download time, recharge batteries time & plan for tomorrow..
P.S. We both got a little sunburnt today
