Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Twillingate....It was a big day in the car today.. We left Trinity 4 minutes behind schedule at 0834, I have told Kaff she will have to lift her game !!
We followed the coast around from Gambo we stopped at Dover to see the fault line ...Its Newfoundlands only city with a fault .. Apparently it runs right through the town. I will put the picture up of the verbage.. After there we kept driving through Centreville and New-Wes-Valley and at Deadmans Bay the road crossed a thin natural Causeway and the seawater beach was on one side and freshwater beach on the other it was quite funny to see, but as I was driving and we were on a schedule we didnt stop.
Our lunchbreak came at 1330 at a place Kathryn picked from a sign on the Highway "Rocky Edge Diner" in a town called Musgrave Harbour.. When we found it she didnt want to go in, but when in Rome you have to eat where the local eat. It was a pretty new place and nice and clean, we got talking to the lady who Kaff has claimed as Eskimo as she came from Labrador further north. Her husband was the cook and Musgrave Harbour was his home town. She said this winter they were going to close up from September to June next year because business slows down, they are taking jobs at a mining camp as Cook & Baker in Alberta !!!! Nice sea change for winter hey ...only like -40 degrees in an Alberta winter.
Our lunch finally came out..I had ordered a Hot Hamburger sandwich because I thought it was a hamburger. It came of course with fries and carrots, then she asked if I wanted Gravy so I said OK just a little.. Check out the photo...It was massive, the sandwich had 2 large burgers in it then the whole lot was covered in Gravy..Best hamburgers I have eaten I reckon...I didnt ask what meat they used in case they said Moose. Which to me would be like eating Skippy.
Anyway at around 1530 we pulled into the Isle of Twillingate and bang what smacks us in the face .....An Iceberg right in town. So Kaff the Iceberg stalker wanted to climb all the rock to get the classic photo , but I had to reign her in and get her back into the car so we could find our campsite for the night. So as we came to the road the Campground was in Bang even closer was another Iceberg, right in our face. So we quickly checked in and put our tent up...We are on small rocks tonight as its an RV site because we wanted power and water . Then off we went with our cameras. As we were taking pictures of the Iceberg there were kids swimming in the same Bay...I tell you these locals must have thick skin.
The weather was great again today and we are both in singlets. Probably about 27 degrees but its a bit hazy about town, hoping it may clear tomorrow for even more Iceberg photos. They call this place Iceberg Alley and they break away from a Glacier in Greenland and they take around 2 years to travel down to St Johns melting all the way.. The amount we see is only 1/10 of the total iceberg so they must be huge. The one we were watching near our camp was breaking down and there were lots of little pieces floating around. As we sat looking you could hear the ice cracking and bits falling in.. It will be interesting to see whats left tomorrow.
Another thing I have noticed since Bonavista is the cemetarys, they separate all the religions. The Pentacostals, the RCs, Anglican, United churches and even the Salvation Army. They not only fence them off but sometimes they are in a whole different area of the town...Spoke to Mum and she said we used to be like that ! So much for together in death !
