Icebergs, Moose & Vikings

L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Well what a day today has been. After an amazing nights sleep in a real bed in a dark room we both slept like logs...we were out the door at 0900 to go to do the Viking place at the visitors centre. We watched the film they had and read all the blurb and then we went down onto the site with a guide. Having a guide was good as it answered a lot of the questions we had about the area. Like: Why are there little gardens about the size of half a tennis court, beside the roads. Well apparently the soil is so crap they cant grow anything but when they build the roads they cut into the soil and flip the topsoil over onto the side of the roads and this is the good dirt so anyone who wants a garden goes out and builds on beside the road anywhere.. The next question we had was all the chopped woodpiles beside the road. We it is cut and stacked by the roads to dry out, I also think they just leave it there then and grab a sled full when they need it. The last question is one I have mentioned before and that was all the random cars parked beside the road...they are the berry pickers although up here they are picking some Bake Apple thing that they turn into jams..those pickers are everywhere..
Questions answered we then went on with the story of the Viking . They were the first to land in North America way back when, they came by boat from Greenland for the timber as they had none in Greenland. At this site in L'Anse aux Meadow they found the remains of their settlement and by digging it out they were able to reconstruct their life and replicate their buildings. Their was also a journal left by Leif Erickson the first explorer to land here. It was a really good, they had Vikings dressed up inside the remade houses and they also told the story of the Viking.
After we left there we went across the road to another Viking place which had a remade village and also a Viking ship, or rather a boat. where we also heard all the viking stories from the boatman, the woman cook and then the Blacksmith, we also got to try the Toutine with jam which was yummo so I am looking forward to trying it in a restaurant.
After that we drove into St Anthony which was a bit of let down as a town. It did have a Tim Hortons though so when it was time for food it was a toss up between Tims and Pizza Delight which was like a Pizza Hut Buffet ... As the Champion procrastinator in the car couldn't choose, I took the decision out of her hands and went to Pizza delight which proved to be a good choice.
It was in a small Mall so we went into the other shops and Kaff bought some earrings as she had lost one back in Rocky Harbour somewhere. She looks really beautiful now. We picked up some fresh supplies then took off for the St Anthony Lighthouse. What a treat we found another Iceberg...who would have thought after this heat there would be any left. It must be spectacular in the beginning of the season.
We decided to take a drive around to the opposite side of the bay St Anthonys Bight and St Carols then Great Brehat and blow me down if we didn't see another Iceberg..
Kaff said we should visit Cape Norman, Wild Bight & Cooks Harbour. It was about a 45 minute drive back south and when we turned off the Highway I received a whack in the arm "Stop" no "go" no "slow down" no " look out !"  and there it was, mother moose and her young one . By the time I stopped the moose and us were just eyeballing each other until she decided to take off. We were so excited and had pumped off about 10 shots together. Bang, tick that box, better than yesterdays moose photo..
Onwards we went to Cooks Harbour which was a very clean and neat town. The countryside around was so Barren it looked like a moonscape. The weather and soil is so harsh nothing grows except grass in the protected areas. Very amazing. We drove on down a dirt road to the Light house at Cape Norman which is at the most Northern Point of Newfoundland Island. It wa stunning in its own Moonscape way. As we looked out over the ocean we saw whales and we could also see the mainland Labrador. Beautiful spot.
When we left there it was getting last but we squeezed in a trip to Raleigh, Ship Cove which was cute and also Cape Onion which we went to just for its name. Then we called into Quirpon to see if we could see the lighthouse hotel as well as the lighthouse but we found neither and after reading a sign we decided that it was on an uninhabited Island off Quirpon. Then it was home to out lovely cottage to enjoy the comforts of home before we head south tomorrow..A top day.
