The Inland Surfers

Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada
Moncton:    We have had a few busy days. Yesterday we left St Johns Newfoundland along with most of the population as the airport was very busy. People were sitting downstairs with their bags and we wondered why until we checked in and went upstairs to the departure lounge and there were only 2 little shops and a thousand people.. We were lucky to get all our stuff on as we had packed a box along with our tent we had 2 pieces of excess baggage, $20 each so quite reasonable. Our hand luggage, I had 3 pces and Kathryn 2 so we were fully loaded. The flight to Halifax was on a small like Dash 8..In Halifax we had to wait 45 minutes before getting called for our flight to Moncton and it was on a small 18 seater..I mean really tiny, so small we couldn't fit any of our Backpacks anywhere, the co-pilot ended up taking them and strapping them into two spare seats. It was only a 35 minute flight and the scenery was stunning.
Moncton has been a real surprise, we ended up here by accident as I made an error in ferry timetables from St John and I have been so worried it was going to be a dump and we were booked into a cheap motel etc etc etc . I was so glad to be proved wrong.
We picked up a hire car from Budget as the girl there was pretty unfriendly but she did give us a beautiful car..Its a Ford Edge SUV and has all the bells and whistles, so many that as I drove Kathryn had to sort out the dashboard. The town was really easy to get around and we found our way to the motel do dramas. The girls at the Motel were great and gave us heaps of advice as to what to go see today.
At about 2000 I decided to reread my travel Insurance regarding the Hire Car insurance..as here in Canada they don't have Excess. If you prang the car you are totally responsible for all damage. When I read the insurance they reimburse you the excess insurance.! Its all totally confusing, so after discussing it with Kaff we decided to go back out to the airport and take out the insurance. I cant believe we made it around Newfoundland in the car there and weren't properly covered !! Anyway we got out to the airport and the same woman was on and she couldn't have been nicer...she must have flicked a switch on her personality .
Today after breakfast we took off to Downtown Moncton. They have this massive river and its tidal, so twice a day this like tidal wave (not huge...about 18 inches) it comes from the Bay of Fundy down the River. Surfers get on their boards and sit in the river to wait for it to arrive, they have the times all written up, its like clockwork. So there we were beside the river in light drizzly rain and around the corner came the wave with 3 surfers. Quite amazing really. The river is really muddy with a red mud.
After that we travelled south along the coast destination Hopewell Rocks where there is another Bay of Fundy tidal phenomena... The Bay of Fundy is supposed to have the largest tides in the world and at Hopewell Rocks we took pictures of the Rocks at high tide and then we left to come back later in the afternoon to see the low tide. My pictures will show you.
So while we were waiting for the tides to change we drove around the most gorgeous countryside ever.. beautiful homes of real character some which were totally trashed and others were neat as a button . The lush green grasslands and paddocks and the muddy rivers and streams all so picturesque.
Now with all this beauty around, we had the once called Kodak Kaff in the passenger seat, now called Canon Kaff on account of her new huge camera with the big zoom. She missed a few crucial shots due to forgetting to take the lens cap off, or hitting the wrong button and blacking out the screen and so on and so on. There were several Oh, arrs, and oohs as she fumbled about trying to get the huge Phallic system operational...Epic fail. However it did provide us with some entertainment in the car as we haven't quite worked out how to change the satellite  radio properly .  This morning we listened to Elvis sing Gospel because its Sunday...
Kaff found us some great covered bridges on some of the back roads which was interesting as two of them were still working bridges with one of the others closed to cars but still used by stock. It reminded me of the movie "The bridges of Maddison county".
We had some lunch at a small place call ALMA and the food was excellent ..I had a Lobster Pannini and salad and the fresh lobster was yummo . We found some more Androndeck chairs and the lookout at the top of the range in Fundy National Park even had some red ones.   So after a few chair photos we had to move it back to Hopewell Rocks to see the low tide. The difference was amazing we climbed down the stairs and actually walked around all these massive rock formations which are usually underwater. It was all really unusual and different and there were heaps of people walking around. From the top there was great views of the huge mudflats.
Travelled back into Moncton calling into Sobys the supermarket to pick up supplies for camping as we are back into the tent tomorrow night in Charlottetown. Look out Anne of Green Gables...just imagine that.
