Cornwell: So here we are at the KOA Camp grounds in Cornwell which is a 15 minute drive from Charlottetown. We left our hotel at Moncton around 0900 and went down the road for breakfast at Tim Hortons again due to the line up for free breakfast at the hotel. At least at Tims you still line up but you get far better quality food. So after a Bagel & hot chocolate we set off for the town of Shediac on the Northern coast towards PEI. This part of New Brunswick is all very French..the people all speak French, the people who serve you flick between english & french at the drop of a hat. I wish I was that clever. Mother why didnt you bring me up bi-lingual ??
Anyway in Shediac they have the Big Lobster so naturally we had to stop there and get a photo
. Theres lots of water around the town and all the RV Parks were full of RVs, I think a lot of the folks from cities around here park there vans here permanently. it was definately a holiday spot. We bought a new bucket here which nearly broke the bank at around $4.50 . From there we drove through to Cap Pele, another seaside town, before hitting the Highway.
We soon made it to the PEI Confederation Bridge which connects the PEI to the mainland. The bridge goes for 13 klms which is a fair way. On the Island side there is a toll and we should have paid $45.00 but we peeled off before the toll and went to the Information building to pick up maps. When we went back onto the highway we had missed the toll booths..We still dont know if we will get slugged when we leave or not, I guess we will have to wait and see.
The KOA Campground is terrific. Its pretty busy and theres a lot of kids about but they all seem to be well entertained with all the amenities. We are one row back from the water and under a couple of trees its a lovely spot
. We set up the tent and had some lunch before taking off for a drive to find some lighthouses. First stop was Fort Amhurst at Rocky Point .. That had 2 lighthouses. It was the original French settlement..the Arcadians. Then along came the English and booted them out, deported everyone like I have talked about in my earlier blogs. There only remains an area where the buildings used to be. Further on from there we found another lighthouse with a house attached. I love the old houses and this light house house was no different. All the rooms were covered in very busy wallpaper, it must have been so fashionable many years ago. It was called Blockhouse Point Lighthouse I think.
Leaving there we travelled back along the Coast stopping along the way in nice little places like Canoe Cove and Hampton eventually to the small village of Victoria by the Sea. We found another 2 lighthouses. Only one was accessable. We wandered about the cute town with the beautiful old houses before pushing off to the downtown of Charlottetown
.
We drove along the waterfront in Charlottetown looking at all the beautiful old mansions. It is a lovely old city very small. Its a crap place to find a park though.. as they all were permit only parking. We eventually found one out by the Harbour , We think it was Naval Car Park but it was the only one which didnt have Towaway signs. As we walked back to the wharf area we were passed by 2 police cars, sirens wailing then came an ambulance then another 2 or 3 police cars, so we watched the scene unfold..all these vehicles were at the end of the wharf, then around came a Police Zodiac boat, the Ambos wheeled the stretcher down to meet it, in the boat was a man in Hand cuffs..A local bloke told us it was probably a jumper..When we looked up at the bridge the traffic was at a standstill.. So the bloke must have jumped off..We are yet to decide whether he was being chased by the police and stopped ontop of the bridge and then jumped or if he was trying to commit suicide. We will have to sleep on it to decide what the scenario will be , as we have no TV to watch the news we will just have to make a story up that fits with what we saw...
We went to a lobster place for dinner that was floating on the water but as there was a bit of movement we decided to move onto another Lobster place that was on land but overlooked the Harbour. I had another Lobster Roll but it wasnt a patch on the one from Alma NB.
We are back in tent city and tomorrow we are off to Cavendish.. and we all kn ow who lives there.
