Just Imagine visiting Green Gables

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada
Cornwell Day 2: We had serious fire envy in the campground last night. Each site has an old wheel rim to use as a fire pit, but as we have no camp chairs we are only using the bench table & stools set we miss out. We had a couple of young lads behind us last night and they were drinking and I was thinking Oh dear.....However they took themselves off somewhere else and I didnt hear them come home, Kathryn did however as they decided to move their tent but one of them was so drunk he had to sit out while his mate moved the tent..We still cant work out why you would move your tent in the middle of the night anyway....
This morning we were off to see Anne of Green Gables Home . I think it may as well be called Anne of Green Gables Island as all roads lead to Cavendish.. We went vis the coastal road which was National Park and it was gorgeous except we couldnt see the sea as we drove along but then we suddenly came upon a Lighthouse right on the Beach at Covehead Bay, on the otherside of the road was a small marina and you could charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. There were a lot of people in this area as they have huge campgrounds and a big Golf Course.
The countryside is just magnificent. To see it from the air it would look like a checker board as the fields were purple bright yellow with Canola then Bright green with potatoes then dry wheat. Everywhere you look was a post card picture. I have my neckbrace on now from rubbernecking.
Our next stop was North Rustico Harbour and we watched some canoers take off for a paddle around the Bay . The colours reminded me of Broome as the coastline was that rich red earth colour, just beautiful. We had wasted so much time dawdling we decided to head straight to Cavendish . First stop was L.M. Montgomarys place. Of course there is nothing but the basement rocks left of this house the Author grew up in with her Grandparents, but the family still live out there on the property and they run the tours of the area. At this site they had a library which holds all the souveneirs and all the books she has written, they had her original writing desk there and a young girl who was one of her decendants gave us a talk about the family. From there we took a 20 minute walk past the old house ruins then through the Haunted wood as she described in her books past where the old one room school house was and eventually coming out at Green Gables. This house was built as she had written in her book, we walked through and saw Annes room complete with the Brown dress Matthew had bought her for Christmas..(Now thats as far as I have got in the book) lol
We wandered around and then decided to find Avonlea and have a late lunch...Avonlea is a recreated village and cost $20 to get in so we gave it a miss and continued through Cavendish to find food . We eventually found a Bakery next door to a Chinese place, so in we went.. Well it was a tip ! Both places were one and the same..Bakery/Chinese..now that makes sense doesnt it ? Big mistake. We listened to the bloke running the place and he spends half the year there in Cavendish running his little dump and the other half of the year in Bermuda getting a Tax break and avoiding the winter. Anyway we ate then ran...
The drive took us around the rest of the Centre coastline and then we travelled back through Kensington in the middle, finally arriving back at camp at 1700...another big day. PEI is devided into 3 parts We have only done the centre part, I think you would need another week to do the other two sides. We have seen so many lighthouses we are now on the lookout for something else..Not sure what but I am sure Kaff will find something.
Tomorrow we head off to the rest of Nova Scotia, we were debating whether to take the ferry or go back over the bridge, I think the bridge will be the go as taking ferries involves a lot of waiting around. We have really loved it here such a beautiful place. We have a little squirrel who seems to have taken a fancy to our site. This morning he was trying to get under the tent right by my bed, then when we were having brekky we were watching him gathering acorns and running off and storing them at another tree, today when we got home he had left acorn scraps on our table and we discovered by the tree next to our tent he has his storage vault, there is a couple of holes I think go right under the tree.
