Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada
Whitehorse Saturday:    Slow start to the morning after a late night. Finally got organised around 1030. We unhitched the wagon and drove into town for a look. Whitehorse is a nice little town, I always like the towns that have a Walmart. First stop of the day was to the Superstore to restock the Larder. I also wanted to buy a small heater so we didn't have to use the gas one in the Van as that's for cooking and hot water. We got our groceries but no heaters in the Superstore. So we ventured down to Walmart and got some petrol then went in search of the Heater. Walmart had none so we ended up going to Canadian Tire next door which is like a cross between our Bunnings & Superauto. Anyway we found one so I was a happy camper.. Lachlan will end up inheriting all my special purchases.
After shopping we went back to the Waterfront (The Yukon River) and they had a tourist tram running, an hour long journey up one end of town then back again . So like idiots off we went on the little train. There was absolutely nothing to look at !! I mean zero !! and it went the speed of a centerpede ! I think I would have rathered someone poke me in the eye with a stick. Eventually it came to an end and I got off at the main street. Kaff went on to the finish as she needed her jacket. I met a girl from the NT in one shop. Her husband flies helicopters here.
We had a quick internet lunch stop at Tim Hortons before heading back to the waterfront to see the big Klondike Paddle Steamer. It was wonderfully restored and really told the story of the Goldrush days and what it was like plying the river with supplies for the miners in Dawson city. They have so many old artifacts aboard you could just imagine yourself travelling up river in style.
The town of Whitehorse was also a railroad town and a gateway for people coming across the Chilkoot trail from Skagway and then onto Dawson and return. It was really something in its day. A shanty town all along the river filled with workers . Then in winter when everything stops because the waterways freeze over. Such a hard life.
After the Paddleboat we went to see the Float planes on the river and then to the Salmon Ladder. Because they built the Hydro and blocked the river they have built a wooden ladder for the Salmon to come back upstream, staff inside the building there count the salmon that climb up through the system. Quite amazing really..
We gave Rocky the RV a bit of a scrub up when we got back so she will be nice and clean before we hit the road tomorrow.
I have taken some photos of some old Army vehicles that we used when the US Army helped build the Alaskan Highway after the war.
Tomorrow we leave and head to Dawson City to stike Gold on the Klondike.
