Homer, Alaska, United States
Homer Wednesday:     No blog yesterday I was far to busy at the shops. Kaff went off and did a Glacier tour on Prince William Sound so I was free to bus about Anchorage which I did. I dropped Kaff off at the pick up hotel and I parked at Walmart (my fave store). I wandered down to the Sears Shopping centre only to discover it didn't open until 1000 and it was also a tiny shopping centre. So the Security guard gave me directions to the Dimond shopping centre out of town so I went there instead. I found some wonderful shops to part with money at. I also discovered my new favourite Fast food..."Charleys Philly Steak" with loaded fries...AWESOME !
After shopping I went over to a friend of a friends place where we were having dinner . When I knocked no one answered so I just sat out in the RV and read the latest National Enquirer which was promoting all the stars and their flabby bodies...Terrific reading and definitely makes me feel better about the ever expanding waistline.
I went back at 1700 and actually found the doorbell and they answered straight away and apparently were home the whole time !! Anyway we went and picked up Kaff and back to their house (Peter & Lynda) and had a lovely evening having a few wines and some good home cooking. Funny how you can just click with people you just meet.
This morning we pulled out of Anchorage at about 0900. Raining most of the way but not heavy rain like we get. First stop of the day was Girdwood, a lovely Ski resort town which was once wiped out in an earthquake. It was very beautiful and they have some of the longest ski runs. They also have a huge Glacier above the town. Very pretty spot.
Next stop was the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Centre. It was just a few miles along from Girdwood and also very beautiful . The animals here are all rescued and most get rereleased once they have been rehabilitated. We got up close and personal to the Cariboo and also two moose, we saw baby moose and 2 huge Brown bears. They had a lot of Bison as well. So hopefully we got some good photos.
When we left there we still had about 3 more hours Driving. It was still drizzling. We had lunch at Coopers Crossing and then kept on to Homer. Kaff spotted a Moose beside the road so I got to take some shots.
Coming into Homer we stopped at the lookout and we could see the 4.5 mile long Spit where the Marina is. It is all overlooked by about 5 Glaciers, just stunning really. Our RV Park Ocean Shores was on the edge of town right on the oceanfront so as I sit and write this I am looking out over the bay and the sun is shinning and its quite warm..Totally different from Fairbanks & Denali. They don't get a lot of snow here, enough to ski on etc but not the huge amounts they get back up in the interior. Great spot, after checking in we went for a quick drive down the Spit and figured there was too much to see and we will have to revisit there tomorrow. Back at the Camp now and Kaff has gone off in search of the great sea Otter which frequent the beach at high tide.
