Archipelago sailing

Stockholm, Stockholm, Sweden
Having some problems with the uploads.

Sunday, May 25, Stockholm . We awoke at 5 and got up to watch the sail in through the archipelago. What a sight to see. There are thousands of islands to navigate. As we near Stockholm they are mostly inhabited! Cables under the water provide electricity. We did see a few outhouses. There are lots do swans on the water and the largest formations of black ducks I have ever seen. This was about a four hour sail in. Stockholm is very modern even with a lot of history. It is built on 12 islands. It was established mid thirteenth century under Denmark, them overthrown to become Sweden. We took a 5 hour tour by bus and walking. We saw the Vasa. It was a 1628 war ship that sank about 25 minutes into its maiden voyage. It stayed in the water for 330 years and was recovered nearly complete. It is a national treasure. This is the last remaining 17th century war ship.We walked in the old town also. The churches here charge admission so we did not go in. The other highlight was the city hall. The Nobel prize banquet is here in the gold room! Really made with small gold and semi precious stone mosaic tiles that represent the history of the area and times . Photos will show amazing details. We almost see the changing of the guard at the Royal palace. The streets are cobble stone and so difficult to walk on! We had to buy our lunch. Everything here is expensive!!! We got three hotdogs and a coke for €11. Just enough to keep Susan from feeling faint! The hot dogs were skinny and twice as long as the bun. They were devoured before we thought about a photo. And once again it was hot. This was the hottest day this year for them. It would not be so uncomfortable except that we have on too heavy clothes. There are lots of historic and impressive buildings and statues. Stockholm is supposed to be a very pleasant place to live even if it gets to -50 at times. The days are very long now, about 5 hours of darkness. We were invited to the helipad to view the sail away through the islands. It was still hot so we did not go right away, but it was a nice place to view the area. Susan had to go at five for her free coke! After dinner we went back to the room to rest and prepare for another long day. We lose an hour time change tonight.

Whew, what a trip. Just got back from camping and am getting caught up. Sounds like you're having a grand time. Susan must just be about afloat by now with all the free cokes, lol. Too bad the pedometer broke Ed, you must have walked a marathon or two by now. I would be in big trouble if I had to do that much walking, wish I could. John and Pat are right, this trip has been a real educational one for sure. Wish we could be right there with you! Take care and enjoy and be safe. See you next week, Dave
