Fresh off the boat

Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada
Tuesday morning, there was no wifi in last nights park. We drove up to jade city. They have free wifi so I am just sending the notes. Hope to add photos later.

Upon waking we check our fan mail, not so many, must be the boredom factor . It is overcast. The park manager says it is never sunny here, but shines10 miles down the road. We make a stop at Tim Hortons on the way out of town. There are beautiful murals around town. We soon cross the bridge on the continent from the island. We had no idea what this road would be like and we as absolutely thrilled as the vistas before us. We travel along the wide Skenna River. The forests meet the waters. The river is swollen with the spring runoff. There are waterfalls, snow capped mountains in view as we travel the highway. There is heavy forest with lots of variety of trees including stands of aspen. The creeks that feed the river are salmon and trout spawning habitat. We are hoping to see wildlife, but the first thing we see is a road kill bunny. How can you get hit when there are probably 10 vehicles in an hour going through! There is a large logging business in Terrace, a town of 18000. The day is sunny and warm and a so delightfully smooth road with great scenery. We head north on the Cassiar hwy, Rt 37 . This is another road less traveled. We did this route once before. I ended up counting cars for something to do. I decide to start as we turned and we met a funeral procession of 28 cars. That blows my less traveled count! Alas we see one eagle. We do turn away from following the river into logging forests. That is when it happened: two young moose grazing along the highway. We screamed MOOSE and scared the poor things away. Soon it happened again when the three of us screamed BEAR as we saw a young bear eating dandelions along the ditch. I call the long rows of blooming dandelions bear bait. Later we saw another young bear eating dandelions and finally we saw a large mature bear on an open rise. YEAH! It started to rain as we decide to press on further than intended. The roads deteriorate greatly. This highway gets a bad reputation for these poor roads. The stops are few and far between. We pass up a couple of possible campgrounds to get to Dease Lake. Ed stops for gas and I go into the store . The eggs were $3.99 a dozen. The half gallon of milk $4.49 and banana were $1.79. I checked the diner next door but there really was no good low sodium choice for Ed and the prices reflect the grocery prices from next door. We push on for a different RV park, but when we arrive lakeside it has no power or water hookups. I told we are high maintenance so back the 6 miles to Dease Lake RV park. We stayed here before. There is NO WIFI! We did see a snow bunny along the road. It was after 5 when we finally pulled in to park. Ed had been driving since 8. Too long a day but a good one for sightseeing.Susan is not happy that there was no place to shop today. I did roast marshmallows on the gas stove for her though. We walked around the campground. From the looks of the amount of moose nuggets in the lot this must be the sand box for some moose. We drove 462 miles today! Too much.At 10 pm it is dusk.

RAIN!! Well, I can't yell bear or moose so I thought I would yell what we have on this end. The scenery sounds wonderful! I love Aspen trees. And getting to see bears and meese (or is it mooses) is a real bonus. Sorry there wasn't any tourist traps for Susan to explore but there will be some down the road. Sounds like you're over half way to the AlCan. Keep the camera ready for more wildlife. Have fun and be safe.....

Too many times people get hooked on the man made commercial excitement when the wonder of God's provisions are all around us. Well maybe not so much of it in NY city. I must say, Linda and I are a little on Susan's side in wanting the convenience of basic shopping close by. Enjoy the beauty.

We envy your trip up the Cassier...we came down it on our RV trip OUT of Alaska in 1997 and saw zippo! Rain the whole way and we could only see a few hundred feet off of the road and it was our understanding that the Cassier is one of the most scenic roads to travel. Look at it twice as hard for us if you please. I think we stayed at Dease Lake on our way out but would have to look at our records.

When we finished our drive south you couldn't tell what color our Chinook motorhome was there was so much mud on it. We stopped at a gas station that had a gentleman and a pressure washer just before we got to the campground. At $1.00/foot we felt it was a bargain. Otherwise we couldn't have touched the doors to open them as they were so muddy. Good memories!! (I am sure those who have never experienced the RV lifestyle are now rolling their eyes and saying, "Right...can't wait!!") Keep making memories.

That's terrific, both moose & bear in one day! We've yet to see bear in the wild here in N.W. GA, but they say they are alive, well & roaming all around. LOVE Susan's pic in front of Tim Horton's. Must admit we've never tried them, but have to put them on our bucket list. Thanks Susan for the reminder! xoxox, Ginny & Gary
