On the road again

Dease Lake, British Columbia, Canada
Since yesterday was such a long day we stayed in bed until 8. Then we set out for the remainder of the lonesome highway. It was 58 and overcast. I started my count yesterday of cars and wildlife. It was thirty minutes before we met a car this morning. This is a wilderness. No one is on the road because there is no where to go. In about an hour and a half we stopped at Jade city. This is a working jade area since about 92% of the worlds jade come from the Cassiar Mtns here. About half of that is exported. It is not near anything but there are people coming in. There are huge boulders of jade about the grounds. There is a huge retail outlet of all sorts of jewelry and gift items. Susan got her obligatory T-shirt. sigh! These are some of the friendliest young people you could find anywhere. They have great wifi and coffee. We were there for 45 minutes. As we travel on we see haze from the wild fires north of here.  We can see the snow capped Cassiar Mtns. We cross into the Yukon Territory at 12:30. By one o'clock we have reached Hwy 1, the Alaskan hwy. We wanted to visit the sign forest in Watson Lake so we backtracked to go there. We left a sign there in 2011. We found our sign and added a new one. This was started in 1942 by a soldier working on the Alaskan highway. There are now over 75000 signs left by passers by. We could not find the Smallman's signs in the 5 minutes we looked. It was just too overwhelming to look for their signs.  It was 82 degrees! People, that is hot for this area. Going back northwest on Hwy 1 we stop at Nugget city to eat at the Wolf It Down Cafe. I think it is named for the one man operator. Hwy 1 is another lonely road with rough roads. The smoke is more visible. We ran into rain, lightening, not good in this area. We were in and out all afternoon. It was only bad for a few minutes. We crossed the continental Divide around 3:30. The waters flow to different oceans from this spot. We pass Porcupine Creek. We wonder if it the famous one from the Gold Rush series. We arrive at the Yukon Motel And RV park in Teslin, YT at 5. We ate at the restaurant. Ed splurged and had pierogi and caribou sausage. He said he just had to eat something once in a while! Susan got the onion rings she had been dwelling on for a couple of days.  We finally saw the cinnamon rolls we have been looking for this whole trip. Maybe tomorrow we will get that treat! The wifi was strong and free inside the restaurant so we checked the fan mail. It is starting to rain and the sound on the roof of the RV is like under a tin roof....hypnotic lullaby.

Today we drove 320 miles . The last two days we drove the 450 miles of the Cassiar Hwy. We met 98 vehicles, not counting while we were not moving. (The count included the funeral procession.) We saw 1 bear, 1 porcupine, 6 snowshoe hares, and a couple of small furry running animals. Not much for that many miles!

When you look at your MoHome broadside, it's not such a "Minnie", looks pretty large. Scenery sounds like someplace I want to be. Even with a "low" wildlife count. Never really thought about jade coming from Alaska. Would like to see that place. Keep up the good blogging and take more pictures. If I'm going to travel vicariously with you, I need pictures, lol.....pierogi and caribou sausage, man that sounds good Ed!! Have fun and be safe, HI Susan!!

Glad you found your sign at Watson Lake. We wrote the office at the Sign Forest a year or so ago asking if they could send us pictures of our 2 signs (long story as to why we wanted that) and they did find them and sent us pictures. It took them awhile because some of the posts had become rotten so new ones were put up and signs were moved. I don't understand why stuff like that is so much fun but it is!! Thanks for our daily fix!

Betty, you will have to tell us more about the sign forest when you get home. Looks like you have a very scenic vacation. Hope you all are feeling well.

Great job finding your previous sign. Not sure I would have had the patience :)...especially in the heat. Learning so much about that part of North America .. thank you & thank Ed for all those miles driven. Susan must have been in her glory browsing the aisles of the outlet. Y'all take care & be safe. Always love reading & seeing through your eyes. xoxox, Ginny & Gary
