On the road to fruit and water

Saint Ignace, Michigan, United States
May 8 MondayWe are leaving Holland in sunny 38 degree weather. We are taking US 31 to follow the shore of Lake Michigan and western Michigan. Since Michigan is second only to California in agricultural products we hope to see some of the areas that produce this food. This flat country just north of Holland is prime blueberry country. They produce a large portion of the US blueberries. When the Dutch immigrants walked across Michigan their first winter and thought the flat forested land looked like home so they stayed. Now the forests are gone and land is productive. Another item I forgot to mention about Holland is that the city heats its downtown streets and sidewalks with hot water in a closed system using water from power production. No snow or ice even in the dead of winter in the shopping area. We begin seeing orchards of apples, without blooms. We also found a wind farm, those huge turbines that produce power. We stopped at a fruit store and got some dried sour cherries that the area is famous for. They also had apples, but Ed preferred his apple in a fritter. We soon see acres and acres of cherry trees. The lady at the store said that the blooming trees are sweet cherries. If there are pinkish blooms it is apples. Mostly we some sweet cherries in the many orchards we saw. Highway 31 is part of the Lake Michigan Circle Tour. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake entirely in the US. We saw an ad for Coho Salmon festival here. I did not know salmon were in this neck of the woods. We came to Traverse City where we could see the most gorgeous turquoise/emerald waters of Grand Traverse Bay! I had no idea. That beautiful color continued through the day as we saw Lake Michigan. We were running on fumes so we gassed up in Traverse City. We are getting 8.8 mph. Not too bad for the first tank. We looked for a place to pull over for lunch by the lake, but Michigan requires permits to enter their parks. We finally pulled into Ace Hardware parking lot and faced the lake from across the street. Peanut butter tastes better looking at a beautiful lake. We took another side trip around route 119. This a windy country road following the lake shore line from higher up. Part of this road was a tunnel of trees...not much fun in a 30 foot RV when the road was quite narrow. This was a nice ride with lots of Trillium growing. The areas had lots of clubs: country, golf, equestrian, yacht, and Summer homes of the monied. It was quite remote to have to travel ever day. Next was Ed's favorite thing to worry about. We came to the Mackinaw Bridge which is 5 miles long and can be closed in windy conditions. Even though there wind warning and construction on the bridge we had no problems. High profile vehicles had to go 20 mph. We drove immediately across the bridge to Clydes Drive In for one of their famous hamburgers, at least it is ranked #1 on trip advisor. Ed had the Big C, 3 quarter pound patties on a bun. It was not a pretty site to watch him eat! Off we go into St. Ignace, the first town in the upper peninsula of Michigan. From the bridge we crossed we could see Lake Huron on the east and Lake Michigan on the west! We got to see two new lakes today. The town is very cute and quaint with near empty streets since the season has not started yet! This is the northern launch to see Mackinac Island. Our lot in the RV park has a view of Lake Huron! Unbelievably we have good tv reception of a few stations in the UP. There is a frost warning tonight! Wildlife sighting today: 6 wild turkey and 4 deerto be continued....We drove 311 miles

We were on at least part of your trip for today last summer. The tunnel of trees road was great. Buy yourself some dried cherries while you are there. They are fantastic. The local grocery stores should have them.
