Last day in Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska, United States
May 23, 2017 Â TuesdayGolden nugget RV park was a quiet place. It was 49* this morning. We decided to go out for breakfast once. On our way we spot a Goodwill drop off for the suitcase full of clothes we were leaving behind. The most Alaskan place we know of is Gwinnie's Old Alaska Restaurant. We have eaten there twice before. It is decorated with all things Alaskan like a muskox mounted head and many other stuffed animals mixed with mining and Native People items. The meals are big enough for a miner. Then we headed to Earthquake Park for a look toward the Denali Range, but it was not visible today. As we were leaving the elusive moose was munching away just across the street. Ed took pictures but the ugly long legged beast decided she had had enough of the paparazzi and run through the gate to the airport property. We had been looking for days for a moose and here in downtown Anchorage we got our wish. Off we go for fill up of gas. We found a Fred Meyer (Kroger) fuel station. To Ed's amazement and pleasure the pump let him use his $1 a gas off with his fuel points! We had this extra day built in just in case we had problems along the way. We decided to see if the beluga whales where here yet. We drove down the Seward Hwy to Turnagain Arm. The tide was out! We drove a bit and went back to Potters Marsh a bird sanctuary with a long boardwalk out into the marsh. There are nesting birds all along. There are other animals in this habitat but none we saw today. With nothing pressing to do we went back to Beluga Point rest area. We waited for the tide to come back in which might mean seeing the small white whales following hooligan fish they must love. The tide here is one of those few places in the world that has bore tides. That only happens at certain times, but it means that the tides are very dramatic. Today's tide was to rise 29 feet in the Cook Inlet. We watched the rapidly rising tide, but no whales did we see. This rest stop is directly across from a stoney hill. We did spot sheep up on the hillside. While we were parked in this beautiful spot we got the RV ready for turn in tomorrow. This was a great place to spend a few hours with the view and constant stream of tourists and locals watching the tide. We headed back to the park to finish the clean up and pack up. Tomorrow we turn in the RV and head to the airport for a long wait! We fly Alaskan air to Seattle, then AA to Charlotte, then home to Nashville arriving Thursday morning. We just HATE the all night flights, but there are few other choices. I will post once more to get us back home. The weather was beautiful today although the forcast was scattered showers. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to rain all day with winds. Sightings: many nesting birds, Eagles, a MOOSEDrove: 75 miles
