Monterrey, Northern Mexico, Mexico
Here I am, first day of the trip. I’ve changed the itinerary
a million times in my head within the past year and up to December I was bent
on starting in Tijuana and making my way down to Ushuaia . I had been to Tijuana before and I was
fascinated by that border, the busiest in the world, with its immense
contrasts. I also loved the melodiousness of Tijuana to Ushuaia and the idea of
travelling the length of Latin America between its geographical extremes. Loved
the thought of the road trip down all of Baja and the night ferry crossing to Mazatlan.
But then time and money and backtracking changed the plan.

So I started out in Monterrey and plan a route closer to
Mexico’s eastern shores instead. This is Mexico’s third largest city and
apparently its economic champion. I’m not much of an architecture appreciator
but this city has obviously put a lot of effort into it. Modernist center, serious
urban revitalization work, huge manicured park, plenty of outdoor art,
impeccably clean metro, American like suburbs as far as the road from the
airport afforded. Not necessarily my kind of place but interesting enough.
Loved the background however: jagged mountains on three sides of the city and
sharp blue desert sky. Happy with the intro I got and moving on tomorrow,
looking forward to the road trip feeling in Mexico’s arid north on
the bus to San Luis Potosi.
