Speech Club

Ochuna, Migori County, Kenya
Yesterday here in Kenya, Sunday February 9th, we held a speech club for the men from the three congregations. The first meeting of the club was during the Feast of Tabernacles. Since I was not in country for the first meeting I was excited to see and be a part of the club. We did get started late as several of the men traveling to the club were late on arriving. Overall the members here are timely with the start of services and meetings, but there are always factors which seem to hinder travel. We started the meeting with tongue twisters which was fun. One purpose of the club is to help the men with English and we have an English only rule during the club time. We focused on enunciation of the English words in the tongue twisters and would strive to say them faster and faster. We only had a couple of topics as the topics master made sure that everyone in the club answered the first question which was about favorite sports and why. Having years of experience with camps here in Kenya I am well aware that the majority love football or soccer as we would call it in the US. My first thought was that everyone would say football! But we learned that one preferred track and field, another table tennis and yet another, who is the oldest member in the club, enjoyed pole vaunting and apparently was very good at it. The second question was a hot topic of discussion. Here in this part of Kenya, many, including Church members, believe that birth control is simply wrong. If children are a blessing from God, why would you deny these blessings? Also, if God promises to provide for you and your family, it will provide even if you are poor and have 12 children. Many of the members are truly subsistence farmers and have very little in terms of physical wealth. School fees are high in Kenya and educating children is a challenge. The answers went back and forth on this topic. I did discuss during the evaluation period that it is a Christian responsibility to provide for your family and it is irresponsible to have so many children that you can not provide the basic necessities of life much less educate them. We also discuss if God practices a type of birth control by not calling everyone to be first fruits. It was a good question by the topics master and a good discussion.
At this point all of the speeches are ice breakers. We had four speeches and evaluations. It was a treat to hear the men, especially a few young men whom I do not know as well, give their ice breaker speeches. It is a wonderful way to learn about the men. Two of the young men are FOI Scholarship recipients and demonstrated good speaking ability thanks to their education.
After the speeches and evaluations, Cody Kitts provided a lecture covering signs of God’s true Church.  It was a very informative lecture for the club members. After all was said and done we shared sodas and biscuits and enjoy more fellowship. It was an uplifting day.
