In 1995 I made a short trip with some friends, renting a small sailboat and cruising the Greek Isles. Mary never totally forgiving me for leaving her at home, has insisted "we" tour Greece before our brain cells and mobility fail. Planning the trip with good friends, John and Kathy Grotting who live in California, we have decided to make the trip in a "seat of your pants" style. Our first stop will be Athens where we actually have reservations for two nights. The only other reservation we have for lodging is Sept 28, our first night in Crete. The remainder of the trip, well let's say, it will be an adventure in language, negotiation and hoping we don't have to sleep in the car. Kathy, who has been taking Greek lessons, will be our "go to" person for translation.
We plan to see the Acropolis some great museums and a few other sights in Athens (from experience, that is enough time in Athens) and then with a rental car drive through Corinth and start our trek in Peloponese. After wandering around to see some major sights in the Peloponese we will move to central and northern Greece near Macedonia and conclude our mainland segment in Thessoloniki. With a flight from Thessoliniki to Crete we will start our island hopping. A few days in Crete, then to Santorini and concluding in Mykonos.
I am trying something new. Doing the blog with a new Mac Air will be another adventure, but we will give it a try. Errors may be plentiful and being a longtime Windows user, this Mac stuff is already "Greek" to me.
We departed Louisville around 2 PM Friday for a Saturday morning arrival in Athens. John and Kathy departed from Dallas and will meet us late Saturday afternoon.
I had intended to start publishing the blog long before this time but internet connections and lack of time (we have been running hard) has impeded progress. Now you may see some postings coming out in quick succession.
Hugging the grandkids goodbye is a great way to start the trip.
Hope you enjoy as much as we do
Looking forward to any comments
