"Would you get out and cut that limb?"
Dewayne, a nephew, had just got out to cut a limb out of the way a minute before
. Now, he asks me to cut the next one. As soon as I am out of the side-by-side 4 wheeler, he scoots over into the driver's seat. I go to cut the low hanging limbs so we can continue driving through the woods.
"There's one down there that needs cutting also," he says. I cut that one and he points to another for me to cut. I continue to walk and cut low hanging limbs to make a path for him to drive the 4-wheeler through. How did I end up walking and sawing limbs and the young guy does the driving? Shouldn't it be the other way around? I think the nephews know how to manipulate Uncle Larry however they want to. I spent a good part of the rest of the afternoon walking and sawing while he waits and points. I end up hot and scratched up but I am glad to say Dewayne was enjoying the ride. Boy, this nephew knows how to enjoy life. By the time it was over we had a nice trail through the woods for HIM to drive through.
We were driving through the woods near Ash Flat, Arkansas
. Ash Flat has a population of about 1,082 and is located in the Ozark mountains, about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock, Arkansas. It's about 75 miles northwest of Jonesboro, Arkansas, where we drove from.
Ash Flat was established in 1856, aptly named by local residents in honor of a nearby grove of ash trees. Due in part to the remoteness of the area, Ash Flat became the center of trade for nearby farmers soon after its formation. In the years following the Civil War. Ash Flat was home to three stores, a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin and two saloons. In the years leading up to the turn of the 20th century, the town also claimed a hotel, a drug store and a flour and grist mill, in addition to a sawmill that became a necessity after the community saw an increase in lumber production.
We are on some land owned by my brother-in-law, Danny's, Uncle Gene. They drove up the day before and spent the night in the cabin. My nephew, Dewayne, and I drove up earlier today. We brought the 4-wheeler and Dewayne asked me to go with him through the woods to check out deer signs. This will be a favorite deer hunting spot for the family in the next month or two. I thought he just wanted to enjoy my company, but now I wonder if he just needed someone to do the chopping through the woods. Kinda funny he had the little hand saw laying in the bed of the 4-wheeler. I think I got took by a nephew again.
We spent the rest of the day at the cabin talking and went in and out of the woods a few times before heading home. Sitting around the camp fire and enjoying the day outdoors was a lot of fun.
I went home tired and worn out ... but I'm glad the nephew was well rested.
