Short and sweet stay in Savannahket. We trusted a tuktuk driver to take us to the closest cheap hotel. We ended up at a lovely guesthouse called leenas place. Fifty thousand kip a night, pretty durn cheap for such a nice room with its own bathroom and a bed that was so comfy and firm that it actually made me realise how much I missed having a good bed. I had forgotten what real comfort was! Hayley had already located a good vegan restaurant before we got there (as always) named Lins place.
After a short walk around the town we stopped there for a beer Lao and some tofu and green curry
. My tofu steak turned up like square blocks of plain meat in a bun with chips. It was the weirdest most English way of preparing tofu I've ever seen. Luckily Hayley gave me some of her red curry to add flavour to it.We saw that there was a dinosaur museum and after laughing about how shit it would be we actually decided to go to it because it was the closest thing to us at the time. Unfortunately/fortunately we couldn't find the dinosaur museum so went for a walk alongside the Mekong River.
Im sure i saw kids chasing a boy with a brick. The boy on his own was carrying a brick too and at first I thought "oh it's some brick game kids play" then he dropped his brick and ran into a temple and the other kids didn't follow him. I figured "no, kids are just horrible here too, that's nice to know".
We needed some help with planning our next step in our adventure so headed to the advice beurea, it was of course closed.
Great dogs at our guest house
. One big regular dog and one tiny chihuahua that did more outfit changes than a lady Gaga concert. In my brain I was going to say Madonna, but that made me feel old so i said Gaga to show that I'm down with the kids.As we were sat in reception using the wifi to update travelpod we met a strange man. He was the kind of guy that you would assume was a sex tourist but then taking to him we realised he wasn't. He was just really weird. Friendly though, unlike his weird friend, who almost definitely was a sex tourist.
Weirdo says that he is getting a bus out of town tomorrow and to save us the hassle of going to the bus station at 7am (which is when he is going), he will buy us two tickets to Pakse and we can pay him back later.Weirdo had an electric bug racket that he used to swat Mosquitos. He tried to give us it for the night and offered to buy us one in the morning but we were already thinking about moving on because, despite looking alright, Savannahket doesn't really have anything for us
.There was no beer at the hotel so weirdo and his mate went off to get some. We figured it best to get to bed before they came back.
We woke up crazy early, I don't know what time but I just remember being upright and walking outside without really being able to open my eyes or balance properly. We had breakfast and a J food restaurant. You get noodle soup, you don't get to choose. I didn't want noodle soup for breakfast but it was just there in front of me before I could even figure out how to order (or that you couldn't really).Next we rushed for about half an hour down the street to get no help whatsoever from advice place. The guy basically said, buses? You get them at the bus station. When do they run? They will have a timetable at the bus station. Thanks!
We get money changed into dollars and jump onto a tuktuk to go back to the hotel and grab our bags. When we get there we find weirdo who says sorry he didn't get us tickets, he went too early and you can't buy tickets that early on. Then we go straight to the bus station. As we arrived the bus to Pakse was almost full but still in the station. Our driver made the bus wait for us and we just jumped on with no ticket, hoping for the best. The bus guys spend about fifteen minutes throwing stuff like mattresses and boxes of live chickens onto the roof of the bus and tieing them down. I guess our driver is also doubling as a postman today.
Let's go to Pakse and hope there is more to do...
