Punta del Diablo, Uruguay
After the dizzy heights of Punta Del Este I headed towards the Brazilian border and got off at Punta Del Diablo – a small fishing village with about 700 permanent residents, but increasing numbers of tourists each year. This was definitely more my kind of place, the perfect location to relax, unwind and take in some sun whilst sipping fresh fruit juice on a quiet beach. The "town centre" itself is one of the smallest I've seen, although it still boasts a supermarket, a few restaurants, and of course, a handicraft market.

I had met a really nice friendly Uruguayan girl on the bus who was going there to visit friends. We had a great chat and shared mate, something which is even more popular here in Uruguay than in Argentina.  Mate is literally everywhere; people seem not to leave the house without it! If you don't know what it is then get on wikipedia or something as I write too much without including things like that in my blog :D Or just check out the picture and deduce what you will from that. This girl spent ages talking about how much she loves mate with so much passion it was quite scary!

When I arrived we went our separate ways as I went hostel hunting. Beds here are pretty pricey like in Punta Del Este, but the place is nowhere near as commercial so this was a bit of a shock to the wallet. I did a whole lot of nothing here in Punta Del Diablo and it was just perfect. One day on Playa Pescadores and one day on Playa Viuda was just right to top up the tan, have some fantastic seafood and get devoured by mosquitoes once more. Although to be honest I could probably spend a week or more in this quiet little town if time and money would allow it.

Unfortunately as I explained in my previous blog I do not have any photos of this part of my trip, but to give you an idea of how the place looks I have stolen a couple of pictures from other people’s blogs... I hope they don’t mind!

Looked at Mate on Wikipedia! So is it hot? Was she carrying around something that looked like your picture around with her??

Yes it is hot, which means they have to carry around a thermos flask of hot water too! So they all have a thermos, the cup, the straw and the herbs in some tupperware; it really is so impractical, but they all do it and I don't think it will ever change.
